One for the lovers of a hearty, full bodied wine! Syrah (or Shiraz) is one of the darkest, fullest bodied wines produced, teaming with black fruit and oaky spices. This grape thrives in moderate to warm climates, making it perfect for a Californian wine. It's often said that it is a grape which 'loves a view' - growing well on the top of hills where the lack of water in the soil makes the grapes more concentrated and flavourful.
For a seriously varietal style, try the Kahn Syrah from Keep Wines (£44); a Napa Valley wine, it is full of the traditional black fruit and pepper flavours we love in Syrah, but also brings in the style of the area: cassis, eucalyptus and violets. Super interesting!
