Mike Grgich has always had an eye for detail in his wines, a refusal to make anything without focus and seriousness, and this wine is an example of that. The greatest compliment you can give any Merlot is to say it tastes like a top-class Pomerol, and it's certainly the case here, a wine with an underlying luxuriousness and plushness, but all under the control of phenomenal fine tannins, present acidity and layered, orderly complexity - dried tobacco, dark roast coffee beans and leather give way to concentrated, pristine red fruit. One for Sunday lunch.
