One of the things the Californians are not as well known for, but are really good at is making wine from classic Italian grape varieties and bringing something new to them, while retaining the characteristics for which they're famous. This Barbera is a great example - it's light in colour, fragrant and delicate, but it has an underlying richness, a warmth that you wouldn't necessarily expect from an Italian one.
